It must be noted that online CNA classes are designed so you can polish the knowledge you received from your basic nursing classes. CNA regular course work (not online) will assist you in arranging research materials, assign appropriate homework to you and provide the necessary practical training that takes place hands-on in hospitals and nursing homes.

Online exams can be taken whenever you feel prepared, not when the instructor is prepared. You are therefore freed of deadlines. The pace of your studies and the date of certification are up to you.

You must prepare yourself for the freedom of online CNA classes by first performing the groundwork of learning theoretical concepts on nursing and practicing your skills as you learn them in hospitals and nursing homes. While practical experience cannot be gained online, this portion of the CNA’s education does not take much time or cost a lot. This first part will also give you a good idea if a career in nursing is really what you want.

How To Become A CNA Online

Share

The field of health care is becoming very popular with its benefits of job security, good pay and it’s one of the few career choices one has today to really make a difference in people’s lives.  Becoming a CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant) requires training and specific requirements depending on the state you are working in to maintain certification and licensing.  There are schools for this in many areas, but regardless of the state you wish to work in, classes for obtaining your CNA online are also available.

Before we go into the training facilities though, let’s examine the CNA job description in a general way.  The CNA is primarily responsible for the daily management and medical routine of their patients.  They must also adhere to the particular requirements, goals and objectives of the facility in which they work.  One of the main responsibilities of any CNA anywhere is to protect the patient’s rights as they were trained to do.  These patient rights include rights of privacy, the right of the patient to be informed of the their health care treatment program, which also means the patient has the right to reject the treatment program, and the right to be kept informed of every stage in their medical treatment.  The certified nurse assistant will, of course, also provide routine medical care to the patient in the form of drawing blood, taking vital signs and determining the level of pain the patient may be enduring.

The CNA therefore has direct responsibility for the care of their patients.  This is definitely a career for those who prefer human interaction over an insular working environment – not the best career choice for loners.

Where to Go to Obtain your CNA Online

There is no easy answer to this question.  The fact is that CNA online certification requirements vary from state to state with the overwhelming majority of them requiring at least 16 hours of campus on-site laboratory and clinical training.  There are at least two states, Florida and Montana that allow online preparation for and challenge the State Certified Nursing Assistant Examination.  “To challenge” a test means that one can only take the test once.  If the test is failed, it cannot be taken again without attending formal CNA  online training classes.    This route to certification is good for CNA’s whose license may have lapsed as it is a good refresher course for those needing license renewal.

It would also work for those health care professionals who perform private duty nursing care.  This preparation material offered here is a step by step teaching guide to upgrade your knowledge of health care to better serve patients and you can do so from the comfort of your home.

The Typical CNA Online Home Prep material consists of:

  • Material on the roles and responsibilities of the CNA
  • Complete step-by-step guide of the twenty plus clinical skills usually with DVD’s
  • Practice tests which are written
  • Live access to teachers for questions or answers.
  • Usefull hints and notes on test taking and also tips to study for the test.

So, while this  CNA online home preparation class material is intended for Florida Certification, it would be good CNA online certification information to then go on and take the test in any state providing all other clinical course work has been successfully completed according to individual state requirements.

Many community colleges offer a mix of online and on-site campus lab and clinical classes in order to fulfill the requirements of the particular state’s CNA online certification.  There are also private medical certification schools that offer many health care certifications.  While these are rather expensive, they can usually get you certified more quickly than public offerings.

Should You Get Your CNA Certification Before Applying to Nursing School?

Share

Having your CNA certification can never hurt, but is it really worth it?  It really depends on who you are and what your goals are. In some cases money and time could be the deciding factor of not getting your CNA certification.  If tuition cost is a reason, places like nursing homes or hospitals offer free nursing classes. For that tuition could be waived, if you commit to working for them for a minimum amount of time. For those with limited options and resources, it may be your best bet to get your self established with a CNA certification and make some connections in the hospital. Another popular option is that schools will offer CNA certification to pre-nursing students as one or two credit courses. This is designed for students receiving financial so they don’t have to go competing schools.

CNA Certification

There are some people that believe that those who were CNA’s before going to school to become a LPN or RN is potentially a disadvantage!  It’s hard to believe, but true. Many CNA’s have worked “on the floor” in nursing homes, doctors offices and hospitals. From that experience they tend to learn the “real world” way of doing things and handling situations. In the classroom those bad habits are applied and work against the student and their grades. Having a job and getting the experience is a feather in your cap, but be careful. The good news is you can still get valuable experience through your clinicals. It is not uncommon for experienced CNA’s who have graduated as a registered nurse to have a difficult time getting hired in a place where they once worked as a certified nursing assistant.

There are many nursing schools today that require students to have their CNA certification in order to get accepted to their nursing program. Eliminating redundancy for some and saving time is their belief. Many of the skills learned in the early semesters have been previously learned in CNA certification programs. Many schools will spend a few weeks covering information that a percentage of the class is already familiar with. Many believe that their time could have been better spent learning more valuable skills such as bathing a patient, transferring them , taking their vital signs, medication administration and assessment. This has already been taught during lab time in the CNA programs and is obviously inefficient.

It’s always a good idea to check with the schools you are interested in before applying to determine if being a CNA is a requirement. Don’t expect to get any preference in the admission process if you are a certified nursing assistant.  You will be forced with a decision to work and get experience or put that time and effort into another nursing program and focus more on studying.  Forward thinking students have put great efforts and have reaped great rewards by finding local offered nursing externships and consistentlyapplying for them. The experience is invaluable and the job prospects could be better than if you were working as a CNA. Patient care experience is invaluable, but not required.

CNA Certification – Should you get it before you start college?

Share

Without question it would be an excellent idea to earn your CNA certification to help you get into nursing school. It is not uncommon for vocational schools or colleges to require CNA certification as part of their admission process. We have many students who work part time at long term care facilities or at home health agencies while attending school to become a CNA. Getting a hospital job at a hospital as a CNA after CNA certification is not so easy for the beginners. The good news is once you do, there is usually some type of tuition reimbursement if you want to further your career and becoming a RN. Nurses who were once aides  typically have an appreciation for what the CNA does, and once they get their license as a LPN or RN don’t have the “Hey, I’m a nurse, therefore I don’t wipe peoples asses anymore” mentality.  Your first nursing clinical courses are geared toward helping patients with ADL’s, transferring patients and learning the proper way to make a hospital bed. It will prepare you for the nucleus of nursing which is patient care. As a licensed aide before you start your nursing program you will have a head start on those that are not certified. You will gain the experience and the confidence to walk into a patient’s room and start caring for them.

CNA Certification And Credit for Work Experience

There are many schools that will automatically give credit for certain classes during your first semester in the CNA certification program. If you have your CNA certification and have documented work history you should receive the proper points. At other schools you get credits for compensated work experience as a CNA. As an example if you earn your license as a CNA and show you worked before your clinical’s, they will not require you to take labs like Foundations/fundamentals. As part of the process of being accepted to nursing school you may be required to write an essay or go for an interview.  When writing your essay about your healthcare background keep in mind that you have one chance to make an excellent first impression, so make it count!  As a feather in your cap, a CNA certificate and/or experience will be an advantage over those who lack healthcare experience or a CNA certificate.

CNA Certification Classes

Remember, to first become a CNA you must first take a course either online, local nursing home or Red Cross chapter and pass a state exam to get to become certified. Once you have your certifications you are able to start work as a CNA and care for patients who are sick or disabled. There are some nursing homes that provide free training and testing classes, and in some cases will actually pay you. Search the internet for information on costs and exam dates. Most state can license exams consist of a written part and clinical part.

What To Expect During Clinicals

The most common question I get from CNA students is. “What should I expect during my clinicals? Below I listed the top three any student should be aware of.

1. Remain Calm – The most important thing is to remain CALM during any and all situations. A stressful situation can get out of hand rapidly. People are looking to you and relying on you for help. Your panic will be felt by others, potentially causing the patientto loose their cool. Its ok to be nervous, just don’t let it get the best of you.

2. Ask for Help – Never be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help. If you are unsure or uncomfortable with performing a task or duty, asking for help or advice is a must. A good instructor or supervisor will appreciate you for that. By asking for help or assistance you are potentially avoiding a problem.

3. Take Your Time – You have been trained and learned the correct ways of doing things. You are a professional and are expected to act like one. Its hard not to pick up bad habits while doing clinicals and being in the company of working CNAs. Things such as patient rights and following precautions for patient privacy are very important and must be done by the book.

Well, there you have it! Now You have been warned and now know what to expect during clinicals.

When it comes to looking for a job, use all the resources available to you. Hopefully the school you went to offers some type of job placement assistant. The internet is the next best place. There are plenty of nursing forums that have jobs posted, advice and people to answer questions about expect during clinicals. Employers are usual hiring since the demand for nursing is huge these days. Nursing jobs in Florida for example are abundant. Many nursing homes and assisted living facilities are in need of certified nursing assistants.
