There has been a debate going on for many years as to which is better? LPN or CMA (Certified Medical Assistant)? There are as many opinions as there are answers, but only you can decide. We will try and layout the basics and the differences between the two.You can decide which is better – LPN or CMA?

LPN or CMA

The first benefit to becoming a Medical Assistant is that typically you have better hours; usually a daytime schedule since you most likely would work in a doctor’s office or similar setting. Medical Assistants can be found in many different specialties and find themselves working in some interesting environments. They are more utilized in doctor’s offices because they make less than RN’s or LVN’s. The reason for this is they do not have a license, but instead work under a doctor and his license, which makes the doctor responsible for any legal actions. As a Medical Assistant some of you primary functions are to greet and room patients, take their vital signs, prepare the patient for exams, and also to help the doctor perform some procedures. Medical Assistants in some states will make more than a certified nursing assistant, and not do as much of the “glamorous” work. Also, it’s a little know fact but MA’s rank a bit higher than CAN’s in the medical field. If you become a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – this will ad to your value, as this will most likely be a requirement in the near future in some state.

Since LPN’s are more specialized you will mostly find them employed at long-term care institutions, hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, schools, camps, flu shot clinics, home care and some and some specialty doctors offices. This is typical, but not always the case as we have seen. In some medical offices the tasks are similar and sometimes shared between a Medical Assistant and the LPN. Since a Licensed Practical Nurses has a license they will perform more in depth procedures on a patient.

LPN training usually covers the same amount of time as a Medical Assistant depending whether the MA program is for a two year degree or just a diploma. LPN schooling will include more procedures and is given at a higher level than Medical Assistant programs and more in depth in a few areas. It should be known that the MA program will spend more time covering medical insurance and billing and coding classes procedure and a higher concentration on lab procedures than LPN. The salary may be more or less, depending on the area of you live in. Both require professions require you to pass an exam after graduation. Medical Assistants must take a program that is accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES, in order to take the Certification exam. Make sure you research your choice of schools thoroughly.

The main distinction between nursing and medical assisting courses is that the nurse’s courses will be oriented for hospital care, whereas MA courses are designed for ambulatory care. As we said before, please choose your school carefully and do your homework. Look for course that are CAAHEP certified. The benefit of CAAHEP certification is you can become nationally certified. If you go to a course that isn’t; you will most likely only get a certificate. The AAMA gives The National Certification Exam.
